Curriculum

At Edmund Rice College we understand the value of the trades to our Western Australian economy, but also that the majority of job opportunities available in our state are in agriculture and other trades. As a trade specialist College, we have been at the forefront of agricultural and vocational education in WA for many years. The curriculum developed at the College is aimed to provide our students with as many alternative pathways to further education or employment opportunities as possible. Central Regional TAFE (NPN 52789) is Western Australia’s leading state training provider and assists the College with this endeavour, through delivery of several of our Vocational Education and Training courses offered at the College.

From Year 7, students at Edmund Rice College have the unique opportunity to study a diverse variety of subjects; ranging from traditional disciplines such as Religious Education, English, Mathematics and Science, to practical courses in Agricultural Science, Equine and Sport. In years 10, 11 and 12 students have the opportunity to broaden their skills, learning additional subjects such as Agriculture, Equine and Automotive/Engineering and other trades. During their studies at the College, all students have the opportunity to gain a Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), achieving Secondary School Graduation. Students may  also undertake courses at ATAR level to achieve an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank required for entry into public and private universities throughout Australia.

Those students, who go on to years 11 and 12, will complete a minimum of two Certificate II qualifications in their chosen Vocational Education and Training (VET) areas. All Certificates completed whilst studying at the College are fully accredited and nationally recognised. The education options available at Edmund Rice College are designed to meet industry training requirements, as well as offer a unique personalised learning experience for each student, to study subjects that they are genuinely interested and passionate about, to reach their full potential, and get the most out of their time in Secondary Education.

Edmund Rice College is very proud of the calibre of our graduate students, not only do our students successfully transition into further education, but they are well-prepared for the workforce, and make significant and positive contributions to their communities.

Vocational Education and Training (VET)

At Edmund Rice College we pride ourselves on the success rate of our students in being work-ready. During their time at the College, students gain theoretical as well as practical knowledge of many industrial areas that proves invaluable when going onto apprenticeships, traineeships, employment, or higher education. Prior to undertaking a vocational course, each student is given a course handbook, providing a clear understanding of what each course entails, and what the criteria for successful completion is.

Students spend two days of their school week engaging with their elected VET subjects, and their progress and achievements are closely monitored and recorded through course log-books. The VET courses are taught in classes with  small numbers, ensuring each student is given the attention they deserve. The majority of their learning takes place on-campus, due to our extensive grounds and facilities, with vocational course specialists, industry qualified teachers, and TAFE lecturers who come onto the campus to instruct in many of the vocational courses offered at the College. We also, frequently invite quest speakers to come to the College to share their expertise with our students. Our students are given the opportunity to attend a range of off-campus learning experiences through regular excursions, field-days, and camps.
